Remodeling your Bathroom in 5 Steps
/Remodeling your bathroom can seem daunting. You use it every day, so how can you possibly remodel it and keep it functional? Well as long as your bathroom doesn’t have any plumbing issues that need addressed, you should be able to do your remodel work fairly easy while continuing to use it.
Step 1: Paint
Painting is such an inexpensive way to update a room. It always amazes me how much of a difference fresh paint can make. So this would be the first step to remodeling your bath. I would do this step first so that way you don’t have to worry about getting paint on the floor. It will help you save time later. Also, if you bump things during the remodel process you can always touch it up.
Step 2: Upgrade your flooring
Often time’s bathroom floors are sheet vinyl or planks. Some have tile, and if you have tile you might want to try and save it if possible. Some of the old school tiles we have seen are coming back into style and they have a cool retro feel to them. So if they are not in bad shape they might be worth holding onto, otherwise, start by ripping out the flooring. In order to do this you will have to disconnect the toilet and vanity. By disconnecting the vanity you will be able to put the new flooring under the vanity so everything is on an even surface. This is really the only time you won’t have a toilet or sink, but it’s not long lived. Before you install new flooring, make sure your subfloor is in good shape. You don’t want any gaps or divots that could potentially show up in your new floor. Then install your floor! Once the floor is installed, you can hook your toilet and sink back up.
Step 3: Upgrade your vanity
Upgrading your vanity isn’t as tough as it may sound. There are lots of styles of vanities to choose from at Lowes or Home Depot. If you’re really feeling adventurous you could get a custom vanity made to fit your space, although, if you are trying to stay on a budget a custom vanity isn’t the way to go. Once your flooring is down, you can pull the old vanity and disconnect the water lines. Since you installed the flooring under the vanity, the hard part is done. Now you just need to get a vanity to fit the space and reconnect the water lines. Upgrading your vanity will completely change the look of your bathroom- for the better!
Step 4: Upgrade wall fixtures and lights
With freshly painted walls, a new vanity and floor, it’s time to upgrade your lights and wall fixtures. Maybe they don’t all need replaced, but take a look around and see what doesn’t fit with your new bathroom. Look at the towel and toilet paper racks, vanity and ceiling lights and the mirror. These are all areas that could be upgraded relatively inexpensively and will complete the new look of the bathroom.
Step 5: Curtains
Lastly check out your shower and window curtains. It’s not an expensive or difficult change, but replacing these will also give a fresh, new look to your bathroom.
And voila! You’re done!
By no means do you need to do all these steps, but if you did I would recommend sticking to this order. It will help from an efficacy and cleaning standpoint. Implementing any of these recommendations will help spruce up your bathroom. Realistically, even if you did each step you could easily remodel your bathroom for $2500 or less (if it’s a single sink bath of moderate size). Remodels like this will help you build equity in the home and will be a great selling point for future buyers. Best of luck!
